Medicare Advantage vs. Medigap: Which Is Right for You?

Choosing between Medicare Advantage (Part C) and Medicare Supplement (Medigap) is one of the most important decisions you'll make when it comes to your healthcare coverage. Both options have their strengths, and the right choice depends on your personal needs, budget, and health situation.

What is Medicare Advantage?

Medicare Advantage plans are offered by private insurance companies approved by Medicare. They bundle Part A (hospital insurance) and Part B (medical insurance) into one plan, and most also include Part D (prescription drug coverage). Many Medicare Advantage plans offer extra benefits like dental, vision, hearing, and even fitness programs — often with $0 monthly premiums.

The trade-off? Medicare Advantage plans typically use a network of doctors and hospitals. You may need referrals to see specialists, and out-of-network care can be more expensive or not covered at all.

What is Medigap?

Medigap (Medicare Supplement) policies work alongside Original Medicare. They help pay for out-of-pocket costs that Medicare doesn't cover, such as copayments, coinsurance, and deductibles. Medigap plans are standardized and labeled with letters (Plan A through Plan N).

With Medigap, you have the freedom to see any doctor or hospital that accepts Medicare — no network restrictions. However, Medigap plans do not include prescription drug coverage, so you'll need a separate Part D plan.

How to Decide

Consider Medicare Advantage if you want an all-in-one plan with extra benefits and are comfortable using a network of providers. Consider Medigap if you want predictable costs, no network restrictions, and are willing to pay a higher monthly premium for greater flexibility.
